Give one contact its own ringtone
In short: To give one contact their own ringtone on iPhone, install the tone first so it is in the ringtone list. Then open Contacts, tap the person, tap Edit, tap Ringtone and choose your tone. Calls from that number play it, and everyone else keeps your usual ringtone. Text tones are set the same way.
Make a ringtone for one person
Step by step
- Make the tone in RingtoneEditor, tap iPhone, then Save the ringtone.
- Install it: Files → Share → Use as Ringtone on iOS 26, or GarageBand on iOS 18 and earlier. GarageBand can also assign it to a contact directly.
- Open Contacts, or the Contacts tab in the Phone app, and tap the person.
- Tap Edit, then Ringtone, and pick your tone from the top of the list. Tap Done.
- To give them their own message sound as well, tap Text Tone on the same screen.
iPhone and Android compared
Android menu names differ between Samsung, Pixel and other phones. If there is no Set ringtone in the menu, look on the contact’s edit screen.
| Step | iPhone | Android (varies by brand) |
|---|---|---|
| File | M4R, 30 seconds or less | MP3 |
| Install | Files, GarageBand or a computer | Save it to the phone; no separate install |
| Assign | Contacts → person → Edit → Ringtone | Contacts → person → menu (⋮) → Set ringtone |
| Per-contact message sound | Same screen, Text Tone | Depends on the messaging app |
Emergency Bypass
When you tap Ringtone on a contact’s edit screen, the first switch is Emergency Bypass. With it on, that person’s calls make a sound even when the phone is in silent mode or a Focus is on. Keep it for the one or two people you must never miss.
Making a tone you recognise at once
- Pick a clip that sounds nothing like your main ringtone.
- Tap Louder if the clip is quiet, so it carries from a bag or another room.
- Keep Fade on so the loop back to the start is smooth.
Common questions
Does the other person need an iPhone?
No. The tone is stored on your phone and only you hear it. It works for any caller saved in your contacts.
Why does the contact’s tone not play?
The call may come from a number that is not on their card, such as a work line. Calls through apps like WhatsApp use the app’s own sounds.
Can every contact have a different tone?
Yes. iOS lets you set a separate ringtone and text tone on each contact card.
