Set a custom ringtone on iOS 26 — no computer no GarageBand

In short: On iOS 26 you can set a custom ringtone without a computer or GarageBand. Save an M4R file of 30 seconds or less to the Files app, touch and hold it, tap Share, then tap Use as Ringtone. Then open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone to confirm it is there.

Make a ringtone ready for iOS 26

Step by step

  1. In RingtoneEditor, tap iPhone, then Save the ringtone. Safari puts the file in the Downloads folder of the Files app.
  2. Open Files, tap Browse and go to Downloads. It is in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, depending on your Safari settings.
  3. If the file shows a cloud icon, tap it once and wait for it to download.
  4. Touch and hold the .m4r file, then tap Share.
  5. Tap Use as Ringtone. If you do not see it, scroll down the list of actions under the apps.
  6. Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and check that your tone is at the top of the list.

Which install route your iPhone uses

Apple went from iOS 18 straight to iOS 26 in 2025, so there is no iOS 19 to 25. To see your version, open Settings → General → About and read the iOS Version line.

Install routes by iOS version
iOS versionRouteComputer needed
iOS 26 and later Files → Share → Use as RingtoneNo
iOS 18 and earlier GarageBand → My Songs → Share → RingtoneNo
Any version Finder on a Mac, or iTunes on WindowsYes, with a cable

What the file has to be

Using the tone for texts and alarms

A tone added with Use as Ringtone is listed wherever iOS lets you pick a sound. For messages, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Text Tone. For an alarm, open the Clock app, edit the alarm and tap Sound.

Common questions

Do I still need GarageBand on iOS 26?

No. The Files route does the same job in three taps. GarageBand should still work if you prefer it, but it takes more steps.

Where did Safari save my file?

Usually in Files → iCloud Drive → Downloads. If you changed the download location, check Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads.

Use as Ringtone is not in the list. What now?

The usual reasons are a file just over 30 seconds, an MP3 that was only renamed to .m4r, a file still in iCloud, or an iPhone that is not on iOS 26. The fix page for the missing option covers each one.

Can a website set the ringtone for me?

No. iOS only lets you install a ringtone yourself, from Files, GarageBand or a computer. The editor makes the file and shows the taps; the last three are yours.
