Why Use as Ringtone is missing — and how to fix it
In short: Use as Ringtone only appears on iOS 26 or later, for an audio file of 30 seconds or less that is saved on the iPhone and not copy-protected. The usual causes are a file slightly over 30 seconds, an MP3 renamed to .m4r, a file still in iCloud, or an older iOS version.
Save a file that shows Use as Ringtone
Step by step
- Check your iOS version in Settings → General → About. Below iOS 26 the option does not exist, so use GarageBand instead.
- In Files, look for a cloud icon next to the file. If there is one, tap the file once to download it.
- Open the original file in RingtoneEditor, tap iPhone, then Save the ringtone. The new file is under 30 seconds and real AAC.
- Open Files, touch and hold the new file, choose Share, and scroll the list of actions for Use as Ringtone.
- If it is still missing, restart the iPhone and try the new file again.
Every cause and its fix
| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The file is over 30 seconds | It reads 0:30 or more. A file shown as 0:30 can still measure a fraction over. | Shorten it in the editor. Its iPhone files stop at 29.95 seconds. |
| Wrong format: an MP3 renamed to .m4r | You renamed it yourself, or a converter returned a file the same size as the MP3. | Open it in the editor and tap iPhone. That writes real AAC audio in an MP4 container. |
| The file is not in Files | You are looking at it in Mail, Messages or a Safari preview. | Save it to Files first with Share → Save to Files, then open it from Files. |
| iOS older than 26 | Settings → General → About shows iOS 18 or earlier. | Install with GarageBand, or update to iOS 26 if your iPhone supports it. |
| Copy-protected song | It came from Apple Music, or the editor says the file is protected. | No tool can use it. Use a file you own, such as an iTunes Store purchase. |
| Settings has not refreshed | You tapped Use as Ringtone earlier and the tone list looks unchanged. | Close Settings fully, reopen it, and restart the phone if needed. |
| iCloud Drive file not downloaded | A cloud icon sits next to the file name. | Touch and hold the file and tap Download Now, then try again. |
Why a 30-second file can still be too long
Players round the length they display, so a file shown as 0:30 may really be 30.02 seconds. AAC audio is packed into frames of 1,024 samples, and the last frame often pushes a 30.00-second cut just over the line. Apple does not say exactly which length iOS measures, so RingtoneEditor stops at 29.95 seconds to stay inside either way.
What renaming a file does not do
Changing .mp3 to .m4r changes the label, not the sound inside. An M4R file holds AAC audio in an MP4 container, and an MP3 holds MP3 audio. Some converter sites only rename the file. Converting means decoding the sound and encoding it again, which is what the editor does when you tap iPhone.
Common questions
I am on iOS 26 and the option is missing for every file.
Restart the iPhone, then try a file saved fresh from the editor. If that one shows the option, the problem is with the other files, not the phone.
Where exactly should Use as Ringtone appear?
In the Files app. Touch and hold the file, tap Share, and look in the list of actions below the row of apps.
Does the file name matter?
Not for the option. The name you see in Settings usually comes from the file name, so rename the file in Files first if you want a tidy name.
