Ringtone exported but missing from Settings
In short: A custom ringtone that never reaches Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone was usually saved but not installed, runs over 30 seconds, or is not real AAC. Saving the file is only half the job. You still need Use as Ringtone on iOS 26, GarageBand on iOS 18 or earlier, or a computer sync.
Save a fresh ringtone and install it
Step by step
- Close Settings fully: swipe up from the bottom of the screen, pause, then swipe Settings away. Reopen Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
- Scroll to the top of the Ringtone list. Custom tones are listed above the built-in ones.
- If it is not there, check you finished the install and not only the save: Use as Ringtone on iOS 26, or Export in GarageBand on iOS 18 and earlier.
- Still missing: open the original in RingtoneEditor, tap iPhone, save a fresh file and install that one.
- Restart the iPhone and look at the list once more.
Every cause and its fix
| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Saved but not installed | The file sits in Files → Downloads, but you never tapped Use as Ringtone or Export. | Finish the install steps for your iOS version. |
| The file is over 30 seconds | It synced from a computer and never appeared, or GarageBand asked you to shorten it. | Shorten it in the editor and install the new file. |
| Wrong format: an MP3 renamed to .m4r | The file came from a rename, not a conversion. | Open it in the editor and tap iPhone to make real AAC. |
| The file is not in Files or Downloads | You cannot find the file you meant to install, or you installed another copy. | Search Files for its name, or save a new copy from the editor. |
| iOS older than 26 | Settings → General → About shows iOS 18 or earlier, so Use as Ringtone was never offered. | Install with GarageBand or from a computer. |
| Copy-protected song | The source was an Apple Music download. | It cannot become a ringtone. Use a file you own. |
| Settings list not refreshed | Settings was open in the background while you installed. | Close Settings fully and reopen it, or restart the iPhone. |
| iCloud Drive file not downloaded | The file shows a cloud icon in Files. | Touch and hold it, tap Download Now, then install it again. |
Saving is not installing
Save the ringtone puts a file in the Files app. That file is not a ringtone yet. iOS adds it to the list only after one of three install routes, and none of them can be done by a website. That is why the editor shows the install steps for your phone straight after the save.
If you synced from a computer
- Let the sync finish before you unplug the cable.
- In iTunes, check that the tone is listed under Tones on the device.
- A tone over 30 seconds usually copies without an error and then never appears on the phone.
Common questions
Where do custom ringtones appear in the list?
At the top of Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, above the tones that came with the iPhone.
Can the editor tell whether the install worked?
No. A web page can only see the file it saved. Whether iOS added the tone shows in Settings, which is why the install steps end there.
Does the file need a special name?
No. Any name works, as long as the file is a real M4R with AAC audio inside.
