RingtoneEditor

Edit your ringtone, then install it

Edit a ringtone, then put it on your phone

The editor is at the top of this page. When the file is saved, the install steps for your phone appear right below it.

  1. Tap “Choose a song or video”, or try the demo song first. Pick Ringtone or Text tone.
  2. Drag the handles on the waveform, or tap Chorus, Loudest or First 30 s to start from a likely section.
  3. Press Play. Turn on Loop to hear how the end runs back into the start. Use Fade for soft edges and Louder for a quiet clip.
  4. Tap iPhone for an M4R file or Android for an MP3, then tap Save the ringtone.
  5. Follow the install steps shown for your phone. Saving puts a file in Downloads; the tone is only installed after these steps.

Why custom ringtones fail to install, and what the editor does about it

Too long. iOS will not install a ringtone over 30 seconds, and a file that looks like 0:30 can measure a fraction more. The handles stop at the limit, and iPhone files end at 29.95 seconds, because AAC audio is cut into frames of 1,024 samples.

Wrong format. An MP3 renamed to .m4r still holds MP3 audio, and iOS may refuse it. Tapping iPhone encodes real AAC in an MP4 container, which is what an M4R is.

Wrong route. iOS 26 installs from the Files app; iOS 18 and earlier need GarageBand or a computer. The editor shows the steps for your phone and keeps the other routes one tap away.

Too quiet. A tone you cannot hear in a bag is a failed ringtone too. Louder raises quiet audio and stops before it distorts. It never turns a loud clip down.

What you can open

Files the editor reads, and what to expect
FileOpensGood to know
MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV Yes Music you own and recordings from Voice Memos.
FLAC, OGG, Opus Usually Depends on the browser. Safari on older iPhones may not read every one.
MP4, MOV, WEBM video Yes The editor takes the sound and ignores the picture.
M4R ringtones Yes Open an old ringtone to shorten it, fade it or make it louder.
Apple Music downloads No Copy-protected. No editor can open them.

Edited on your phone, never uploaded

The editor reads the file, draws the waveform, applies the fade and volume, and encodes the result inside your browser. No audio is sent to a server at any step.

Under the save buttons a live counter shows how many bytes this page has sent. It stays at 0 while you edit and save.

Questions

Is RingtoneEditor free?

Yes. There is no account to create and no limit on how many tones you make.

I saved the ringtone. Why is it not on my phone yet?

Saving puts a file in Downloads. iOS only adds it to the ringtone list after you install it: Files → Share → Use as Ringtone on iOS 26, or GarageBand on iOS 18 and earlier. The steps appear under the editor once you save.

Which iPhones does it work with?

Any iPhone that runs a current version of Safari or Chrome. The install route depends on the iOS version, and the editor shows the one that fits yours.

What do Fade and Louder do?

Fade softens the first and last moments so the tone does not start or stop with a click. Louder raises a quiet clip towards a standard loudness and stops before it distorts.

Can I make a text tone?

Yes. Tap Text tone and the selection starts at 10 seconds. It installs the same way as a ringtone, then you pick it under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Text Tone.

Will a song from Apple Music work?

No. Anything downloaded from Apple Music is copy-protected, so no editor can read it. Songs bought from the iTunes Store, files you own and your own recordings all work.
